The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in a statement on July 4, 2023 informed that the El Niño phenomenon has begun and its strength is expected to increase at the end of 2023 until the beginning of 2024 with a probability exceeding 90%.

The El Niño phenomenon occurs when the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean around the equator warms by more than 0.5ºC compared to the long-term average value.

The El Niño phenomenon usually occurs every two to seven years and lasts between nine and 12 months. In early 2024, the El Niño phenomenon is expected to have a more significant impact when its intensity reaches its peak where the country will experience prolonged hot and dry weather.

This in turn will result in an increase in temperature and a reduction in the amount of rain and can cause haze conditions across the border if the burning of forests and peatlands is not controlled.

During hot weather conditions, all parties are advised to practice saving measures in the use of water. People are also advised to avoid open burning, reduce activities outside the house or building and drink enough water.

MET Malaysia constantly monitors weather conditions throughout the country and will issue a Heat Wave Advisory if the daily maximum temperature reading exceeds 37.0°C for 3 consecutive days.

The public is advised to always be aware of weather changes and get the latest weather information and warnings through the official website, myCuaca application and MET Malaysia’s social media.
