Selangor’s Free Insurance Scheme Has 5.24 Million Signed Up

A total of 5.24 million individuals are currently signed up for and covered under the Selangor General Insurance Scheme (Insan) as of June 30, 2023, according to project coordinator, Nur Syuhaida Jamalluddin.

However, she said many are still oblivious to the benefits offered under the scheme that are made available to them.

“To date, only about 100 claims for compensation due to accidents have been filed by policyholders,” she said.

“Some of these individuals are automatically registered in our system, so we urge them to contact us in the event of an accident or death to check whether they are registered and eligible for the provided compensation.”

Out of the 5.24 million registered individuals, Syuhaida said approximately 3.5 million of them are Selangor residents of voting age, while an additional 750,000 are infants and children aged 30 days to six years old.

A further 900,843 are children aged between seven and 19, while the remaining 81,797 comprise others from among the general public.

Insan is a group general insurance protection implemented by state agency Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or (MBI), and is applicable to some six million residents of Selangor aged from 30 days to 80 years.

The criteria to register for Insan has been expanded to include individuals with identification cards or MyKid residing in Selangor, compared to previously, which restricts eligibility only to Selangor-born voters.

The scheme, with a total coverage value of RM60 billion, provides insurance coverage of up to RM10,000 for permanent disability and death caused by accidents. Registration is open from October 1 last year until September 30 this year.
