Shah Alam To Heed Federal Govt Call On EV Infrastructure

The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) plans to install 10 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the city’s main commercial areas by the end of this year to enhance EV infrastructure within the state, said Mayor Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid.

Fuad said additional EV charging stations will then be set up based on the demand and compatibility within the major commercial hubs, in line with the federal policy to support the use of EVs.

“We are taking measures to align with the policies set by the federal government, which promotes EVs. The city has also been approached by numerous interested parties wishing to install EV infrastructure.

“However, we acknowledge that the policy established by the federal government is still in its infancy stage,” he said to the press on the sideline of the 15th Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS) event at the MBSA Convention Centre here today.

Previously, the Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Ministry had formulated policies under the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, recognising the need to strike a balance between energy demand and carbon emission reduction.

This understanding encompasses the development of EVs and their associated ecosystems in Malaysia, with an ambitious target to establish 10,000 EV charging points by 2025, as outlined in the blueprint.

EASTS is a convention held biennially and aimed at fostering excellent transportation research and practice.

This year’s convention welcomes around 700 participants from countries including Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Taiwan and Sudan.

The conference primarily centres on issues and the direction of the transportation sector, highlighting best practices, fresh innovations and the latest technology within research and development.

Around 500 working papers are set to be presented and deliberated upon at the conference.

Nor Fuad said MBSA will carefully consider some of these suggestions and seek to implement them for the betterment of the city.
