The police have confirmed the arrest of co-founder and majority shareholder of MYAirline Sdn Bhd (MYAirline), who was arrested last night along with two members of his family.
It was reported that Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Deparment (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the police have obtained a four-day remand for all three suspects.
It is understood that the Datuk and his family, said to be the wife and son, is being detained at the Jinjang Remand Centre to assist with investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).
The trio was arrested at their Shah Alam residence yesterday, a Chinese media reported.
Attempts by Business Today to contact MYAirline met with a reply today (Oct 18) saying: “No statement from us.”
On Oct 12, MYAirline announced that it had suspended operations effective immediately due to “severe financial challenges”.
It was reported that the troubled low-cost carrier said it is looking for potential strategic partners and looking for avenue to raise capital to rescue the airline.
The co-founder was reported to own private firms Zillion Wealth and Trillion Cove Holdings, which have stakes of 88% and 10%, respectively, in the airline.
The remaining 2% or 40,000 shares are held by MYAirline’s former CEO, Rayner Teo, who stood down recently due to health reasons. Both of the co-founder’s family are also said to be associated with MYAirline.
Two days ago, MYAirline is adamant of retaining all nine of its Airbus A320s while waiting for a new white knight on swoop in and save it from a bleak future.
Its interim accountable executive Datuk Seri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said the airline is discussing with its lessors to keep all of its narrow-body aircraft.
