SESB’s Will Deploy New System To Address Electricity Rationing

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will carry out the installation of energy storage system through a battery with a capacity of 100 megawatt (MW) in a step to address the electricity rationing problem in the short term.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said that the matter has been approved by the Energy Commission and it is a vital step to work as a back-up solution to accommodate with high demand at peak times especially in hot weather or during the supply system failure.

“Sabah is the only state in Malaysia that still experiences electricity rationing. This happens because of the existing low capacity generation with reserve margin below 12 percent.

“SESB hopes that the Electricity and Tariff Supply Planning and Implementation Committee (JPPET) will consider EC’s decision positively for the sake of common good and well-being,” he said in a statement today (Oct 19).

Reserve margin is a electricity stock for emergency use especially when there is a system failure or during high demand, that exceeded normal usage.

Madius said SESB also plans to build a alternative cycle gas turbine power generator (CCGT) with a capacity of 700MW as a comprehensive solution to the problem of electricity rationing problem in Sabah.

“The generation of 700MW of electricity supply will be operated using gas. This step is very important to stabilize the electricity supply in Sabah,” he said.
