Heavy rainfall and strong winds caused part of the external ceiling structure at the inner lane of the pick-up and drop-off area at Kuching International Airport (KCH) to collapse, giving passengers and airport users a shock.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the airport operator, said the incident affected a section of the external ceiling structure earlier today due to severe weather conditions.
The affected outdoor section of the terminal now has a large opening in the ceiling, with images released by MAHB showing workers carrying out repair and restoration works at the site.
MAHB said the affected area had been secured, with its teams on site conducting safety inspections and coordinating the necessary response measures.
“The primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of passengers, airport users and staff,” the operator said.
Despite the damage, airport operations at KCH remain ongoing, with MAHB saying efforts are focused on ensuring safe access to the terminal while minimising inconvenience to passengers.
Repair works have also commenced on the affected section of the external ceiling structure.
The area has been cordoned off to allow the repairs to be carried out safely, while normal airport operations continue.
While MAHB attributed the damage to the severe weather, the structural integrity of the affected section and the circumstances that led to the collapse will likely warrant close examination.
