Rail services in the Klang Valley will adopt a full open payment system by 2025, providing commuters with additional options for their fares, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said Prasarana Malaysia Bhd is currently finalising plans for its Rapid Rail services, comprising the Kelana Jaya and Ampang LRT lines, Kajang and Putrajaya MRT lines and the KL Monorail.
He said design and development works are expected to begin in March next year, before implementation a year later.
Once completed, Loke said the system will accept payments via debit and credit cards as an alternative to the current Touch ‘n Go and token options.
“Prasarana will take 11 months until February 2025 to equip 50 per cent of gantries in all stations with the open payment system,” he said in Parliament today.
“By August 2025, all gantries in all stations will be ready. If necessary, the system will be expanded to include other payment options like via QR code in the next phase.”
Loke was responding to a question from Subang MP Wong Chen on the status of the implementation of the open payment system for public transportation in the Klang Valley. As for KTM Komuter, the minister said the upgrading of its ticketing system to an auto-fare collection for its entire rail network in the Klang Valley is almost completed.
