Ministry Looking Into Best Mechanism To License Open Google, Meta, TikTok Platforms

A series of engagements have been held with stakeholders under aims to discuss the mechanism that is being considered to license large platform providers such as Google, Meta, and TikTok which generates revenue through content from local media organisations.

The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD), in a written reply to a question raised by Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid [Kuala Kangsar] in the Dewan Rakyat today (Nov 21), on the long-term impact of this licensing on the sustainability of the industrial ecosystem of the national media, said there is a need to ensure the sustainability of the national media industry ecosystem.

“KKD and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is still at the level of examining and studying the need to license or register big platform providers like Google, Meta, TikTok

“This research and study cover various things including implications from a policy point of view on services, aspects investment and trade, taxation methods, as well as aspects consumer safety in Malaysia,” the reply read.

KKD said at this time, there has not been any decision or stance made by the Government regarding this matter. However, initial efforts have been implemented through a committee being formed to explore the details involving legislation to find positive results for all parties in Malaysia including the local media.
