TNB Pledges To Uphold COP28 Goals

With COP28 set to take place in Dubai and the whole world watching on, leaders from across the globe will convene to discuss on the fate of the planet, the top priority being climate change and planetary health.

In line with this Malaysia will also be closely paying attention to the actionable practices being introduced at the policy level, the country has made a commitment to be net zero by 2050 and find ways to make this achievable.

Having a big role to play in our energy transition, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the nation’s largest utility company, has pledged to uphold the goals that is about to be set at COP 28.

TNB will be taking part in the event as the key participating organisation within the Malaysian Pavilion joining the contingent of 200 Malaysian delegates at COP28, under the guidance of the Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change (NRECC), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

“TNB’s commitment to COP28 aligns with our strategic objectives, aiming to reinforce our role in driving the energy transition within Malaysia and the wider region. Our participation enhances TNB’s presence as a key catalyst for change, highlighting the significant growth potential in Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and positioning us as a leader in supporting the global energy transition (ET) by promoting sustainability and a greener future,” said President and Chief Executive Officer of TNB, Dato’ Seri Ir. Baharin Din.

The company aims to use COP28 to form strategic partnerships in energy-efficient solutions, exploring collaborations in renewables, green technology, and finance to foster synergies for growth and support global energy transition. TNB plans to lead ‘brown-to-green’ initiatives and enter new markets, leveraging its industry position for innovation and sustainability.

With Malaysia focusing on ET and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at COP28, Baharin said TNB’s participation in the global conference would emphasise the urgency for ET. “The recent energy crisis underscores the need for national energy independence through renewables. TNB pledges Net Zero emissions by 2050, targeting a 35% reduction in emissions intensity and 50% less coal generation by 2035. We plan to enhance efficiency in our thermal plants, expand our renewable portfolio, and aim for 8,300MW of renewable energy (RE) by 2025.”

The company is currently making substantial investments in strengthening the grid for a decarbonised future. “TNB plans to amplify investments between 2025 and 2030, allocating RM90 billion, with a focus on energy transition. This includes RM35 billion for transition-related projects.” told him.
