Data Companies Told To Register Or Pay Maximum Of RM500,000 Fine

Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) urges data processing companies to register with Personal Data Protection Commission to protect consumers data from irresponsible parties and malicious intent.

In as statement released by the Personal Data Protection Commission, it said that the commission and ministry is committed to strengthen the compliance of Personal Data Protection 2010 [Act 709] resolve issues such as leakage of personal information and data abuse in Malaysia.

“The commission urges companies involved in the processing of personal data and is under the 13 data consumers groups that are made compulsory to register under Act 709, to register immediately,” it said.

Besides creating a data consumers repository in Malaysia, the registration will allow the Personal Data Protection Commission to inform any policy changes and provides advisory service involving personal data protection.

“This will allow it to improve companies compliance on protecting personal data, and directly improved the consumers’ confidence,” he said.

It warns that companies who failed to register with the commission’s office, can be fined for maximum of RM500,000, or three-year jail, or both, under Section 16(4) of Act 709.

Meanwhile, the companies that is not included in the data consumer groups but are involved in personal data processing for commercial transaction, also have to abide by Act 709.

The application to register as a data consumer can be made through data.pdp.gov.my or at the data consumer counter in level 6, data protection counter at Level 6, Personal Data Protection Commission, Communication and Digital Ministry Complex, Putrajaya.
