MNOs Could Explore Satellite To Device As Ways For Remote Area Coverage

Communications and Digital Minister, Fahmi Fadzil said telecommunications companies are expected to explore Internet facilities through satellite to device mobile services in order for services to be accessible everywhere, especially for areas that are remote and do not have Internet access.

Currently 2.7 percent of areas still need basic 4G in the country and that his ministry researching the matter, especially in relation to satellite technology, which could be deployed as early as 2025.

Satellite option has been available for many years, however subscribing to the service was very expensive but has since come down.

Separately, the ministry is also expected to announce a second network entity after the SSA signing with DNB, on this Fahmi said that with the existence of the second network, half of the telecommunication companies will be under DNB while the other half will be with the second entity.

“The second network will create healthy competition between telecommunication companies in further boosting efforts to upgrade their services so that they can be used by the people,” he said.
