CIQ Power Outage Not Our Fault: TNB Chief

Tenaga Nasional Berhad said before any maintenance work to be conducted at border entry buildings like the CIQ in Johor Bharu recently can only be done after it receives approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Works (JKR).

The utility company which came under fire for the recent power outage at the immigration centre down south, has issued a statement on the incident with its Chief Distribution Network Officer, Wan Nazmy Wan Mahmood explaining that any maintenance work involving the supply of energy to the entrance premises involved must be approved adding that checks are conducted every six months to ensure supply is stable.

Part or its SOP during maintenance involves the provision of mobile power sets to CIQ premises owners and maintainers. However, the Chief also said there are times when TNB is not allowed to provide temporary electricity supply through its mobile power sets as happened at CIQ due to height problem which limits the power sets from entering the building area.

Last Tuesday, TNB shut down the supply to the CIQ to carry out maintenance work with the permission of the customer however during that period a temporary supply was needed from the seven gensets belonging to BSI which are maintained by JKR and caused a supply interruption when one of the power sets did not work, the Chief said.

As a forward action, Wan Nazmy said TNB identified two alternative sources to supply electricity to the complex.

TNB said it has also explained to the Johor State Government that the temporary power outage on the day of the incident was not caused by TNB.
