The Real Work Starts As Malaysia Wraps-Up COP28 

The Malaysia Pavilion at COP28 concluded its activities on the closing day, putting a spotlight on key partnerships in the technology and innovation space. With an overarching theme of “Adapting Global Solutions for Local Action,” the day emphasized the importance of localizing climate technologies and innovation.

Approximately 70,000 attendees, including delegates from 198 UNFCCC member countries, climate scientists, business leaders, indigenous representatives, and media personnel, participated in the event.

Key Highlights of the Closing Day:

  1. Localising Climate Technologies & Innovation: Malaysia’s Success Stories: Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, representing the Malaysian Industry Group High Technology (MIGHT), presented Malaysia’s success stories in technology and innovation. The session provided insights into the dynamic advancements within Malaysia’s technological landscape.
  2. Building Smart and Sustainable Cities – Emerging Technologies: A fireside chat explored the role of emerging technologies in constructing smart and sustainable cities. The discussion delved into cutting-edge innovations shaping urban landscapes and fostering sustainability.
  3. Complementary Proteins: Accelerating Climate-Resilient Foods through Regional Collaboration: A panel discussion addressed the future of food, discussing evolving trends, technological advancements, and sustainable practices reshaping the global food industry. The session emphasized the need for innovation in food production and international collaboration.
  4. Leveraging Climate Technologies & Innovation: Entrepreneurs Driving Local Solutions: The presentation showcased Malaysian climate startups, unveiling innovative solutions and technologies driving sustainable action. It provided a deep dive into climate entrepreneurship in Malaysia.
  5. CubeSat & CubeSat Constellations: The Game changer for the Reduction of Climate Change: A presentation highlighted the role of multi-mission, low earth orbit (LEO) CubeSats in mitigating climate change.

Curtain Falls on COP28 Malaysia Pavilion:

The closing ceremony was officiated by Dr. Hartini binti Mohd Nasir, Undersecretary of the Climate Change Division from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment & Climate Change. The Malaysia Pavilion hosted over 28 panel discussions, featuring insights from 60 speakers and attracting over 3000 global visitors.

Noteworthy partnerships were celebrated, including an $8 billion investment in renewable energy projects resulting from collaboration between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Masdar. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged with key players in the energy sector, signaling a commitment to establishing Malaysia as a leader in the global transition to renewable energy.

Dr. Hartini binti Mohd Nasir stated, “Our pavilion might be closing, but the chapters of collaboration, innovation, and exchange continue to unfold after COP28.”

The Malaysia Pavilion’s theme of “Green Growth, Resilient Community, Sustainable Planet” echoed the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and global cooperation.
