The National Registration Department (JPN) is currently in the process of printing 160,000 delayed MyKid (children’s identity card with a chip) since last October, and they will be distributed to applicants in stages once the printing process is complete.
In light of this, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah stated that parents or guardians can temporarily use the birth certificate for any dealings with the government or private entities while waiting for the MyKid to be obtained.
“This is because the birth certificate is a valid government-issued identification document, and government and private agencies have also been informed to prioritize the use of the birth certificate while waiting for MyKid. The Ministry of Home Affairs through JPN is committed to resolving the backlog issue of MyKid applications,” he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara (Senate) today, reported Bernama.
He was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Aziz Ariffin, who wanted to know the current status of the suspension of MyKid issuance due to microchip supply issues and the government’s initiatives to ensure the problem is resolved.
Shamsul Anuar also assured that the MyKid issue would not recur next year as JPN is currently in the process of acquiring a supply of three million identity cards to meet the demand. “JPN has made various efforts, and for your information, we have completed 140,000 MyKid cards that were delayed for 2021 and 2022… we have about 15,000 MyKid cards left to be printed, and it is expected to be completed by the end of this month. For 2023, the acquisition of MyKid supply is in progress, which amounts to three million cards that we will provide to meet the needs. We estimate that, based on the usual birth rate, the annual requirement is between 400,000 to 500,000. We expect that after this issue is resolved, starting in 2024, this problem will not arise again,” he said, reported Bernama.
