KPJ Earns Malaysia Book Of Records Recognition, Excel In Clinical Waste Management

KPJ Healthcare Berhad has achieved recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records for its revolutionary clinical waste segregation initiative.

This initiative is a first for any hospital in Malaysia, underscores KPJ Healthcare’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sets new standards in waste management within the healthcare sector.

“We are honored and humbled to be recognised for our leadership in clinical waste management,” said Chief Operating Officer of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, Dato’ Mohamad Farid Bin Salim.

“Given the nature of the healthcare industry – clinical waste remains a challenge faced by many hospitals worldwide and requires careful planning and handling. This encompasses the full spectrum of waste management – from segregation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment to disposal. As the largest network of hospitals in Malaysia, we are fully committed to embracing this challenge.”

“The novel clinical waste segregation initiative forms a vital component of the Company’s 3-year Sustainability Roadmap, specifically addressing the Environmental pillar of ESG. This initiative directly supports its sustainability objective of reducing clinical waste and optimising waste management, showcasing KPJ Healthcare’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship.”

“Beyond clinical waste segregation, KPJ Healthcare actively promotes environmental responsibility across its hospitals. By encouraging the reduction, reuse, and recycling of water, raw materials, non-renewable minerals, energy, and both hazardous and non-hazardous waste, KPJ Healthcare strives to minimise its environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future”.

This milestone is the result of a strategic collaboration between KPJ Healthcare and Cenviro Sdn Bhd, with support from the Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change.

The partnership has driven an innovative waste management approach across the KPJ Healthcare network, setting the stage for enhanced sustainability practices in hospitals nationwide.

The initiative, initiated with a successful pilot in August 2023 at nine Specialist Hospitals in the central region, focuses on transforming the handling of clinical waste, including materials categorized under SW404, such as pathogenic, clinical, and quarantined substances.

Through meticulous segregation, these materials are converted into SW409, a valuable raw plastic resource, marking a departure from traditional incineration methods.

This process not only recycles non-contaminated plastic bottles but also repurposes them, diverting them from the waste stream.

The outcome of this innovative approach is a substantial reduction in landfill waste, showcasing KPJ Healthcare’s dedication to minimising its environmental impact.

By adopting forward-thinking waste management strategies, the company aims to lead the way in promoting sustainable practices within the healthcare industry.

Following the success observed in the pilot hospitals, including KPJ Ampang Puteri, KPJ Damansara, Damansara 2 Specialist Hospital, KPJ Tawakkal, KPJ Kajang, KPJ Sentosa, KPJ Selangor, KPJ Rawang, and KPJ Klang, KPJ Healthcare plans to expand its clinical waste segregation program to all its KPJ Specialist Hospitals nationwide.
