Western Digital Taps TNB To Achieve Its Ambitious Green Energy Targets

Western Digital is collaborating with TNB Renewables to drive renewable energy (RE) implementation in its operations in Malaysia with the signing of the Corporate Green Power Agreement (CGPA), a significant step for Western Digital in attaining its sustainability targets and is the company’s first long-term green energy partnership in Malaysia.

“This collaboration with TNB is an important milestone for Western Digital to help achieve our ambitious target of running our global operations on 100% renewable energy by 2030 and further reinforces our company’s core commitment to sustainability,” said Dato’ Bock Kim Lee, Senior Vice President, Global Flash Backend Operations, Western Digital.

Under this CGPA, Western Digital will acquire renewable energy from TNB Renewables Sdn. Bhd, which focuses on developing and owning the RE plant locally and in Southeast Asia. The new solar power generation facility will be built for Western Digital’s consumption in Kedah. This would be deployed to three (3) Western Digital operations sites in Malaysia, including SanDisk Storage Malaysia (SDSM), WD Media Penang and WD Media Johor, fulfilling 25% of the company’s overall energy requirement in the country.

Western Digital has already set ambitious goals as part of its established sustainability program and has been recognized by industry organizations, including its Batu Kawan site being recognized by the World Economic Forum’s Lighthouse Network as Asia’s first Sustainability Lighthouse. The company’s targets include running its global operations on 100% renewable energy, reducing water withdrawals by 20%, and diverting more than 95% of the company’s operational waste from landfills by 2030, and achieving net zero emissions in the company’s operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) by 2032.
