Domestic Tourism Rises To 53.4M Visitors In 3Q 2023, Increasing Significantly, By 24.3%: DOSM

Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) in today’s release of BULLETIN OF MALAYSIA’S DOMESTICS TOURISM SURVEY (DTS),
THIRD QUARTER 2023 reported Malaysia’s domestic tourism surges by 24.3%, reaching 53.4 million visitors in Q3 2023 compared to the same period last year.

However, for quarter-on-quarter, domestic visitors in Malaysia slightly declined by 2.0% compared to Q2 2023.

For domestic tourism expenditure, it grew by 33.8% YoY, reaching RM20.1 billion, but experienced a -8.3% decline in a quarterly comparison.

In a statement, Chief Statistician Malaysia Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said, “Overall, Malaysia’s domestic tourism performance until September 2023 recorded 156.6 million domestic visitors, an increase of 25.4 per cent compared to a year ago. On domestic tourism expenditure, for the first nine months, it registered RM61.2 billion, up 33.8 per cent compared to last year.”

He further commented, in Q3 2023, tourism-related industries in Malaysia showed positive performance. Theme park revenue led with a 64.1% surge, followed by domestic airport arrivals (+18.2%), highway traffic (+10.7%), retail sales of automotive fuel (+6.6%), and zoo revenue (+0.6%), compared to the same period last year.

In the same period, accommodation revenue index increased by 20.3%. Occupancy rates for hotels saw positive growth: five-star hotels (+6.9%), four-star hotels (+5.4%), three-star hotels (+32.9%), and two-star hotels/chalets/motels (+9.3%). By location, beach and town accommodations experienced a rise of 5.1% and 9.9%, respectively, compared to the previous year, added Mohd Uzir.
