PDP – Futurise Develop Personal Data Protection Standards

The Department of Personal Data Protection (PDP) and Futurise Sdn Bhd (Futurise) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in developing standards and guidelines for personal data protection.

Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo said today (Jan 16) that setting minimum requirements and more practical methods have been made to protect and manage personal data that is under the control of any individual or organisation.

According to him, the strategic cooperation includes the development of a personal data protection standard, seven guidelines, a personal data protection portal and a training module related to data training officers.

“It not only fulfils the legal requirements but also shapes the future that produces digital interactions characterized by security, trust and accountability.

“This cooperation between the two parties signifies a mutual commitment to foster a culture of trust and transparency to assure users that their personal data is handled with care,” he said during his keynote speech at the MoU signing ceremony between the PDP Office and Futurise today.

Also present were the Secretary General of the Digital Ministry, Datuk Rodzi Md Saad and the Chief Executive Officer of Futurise, Rosihan Zain Baharudin.

Gobind added, there are seven new guidelines that have been developed under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) including leak notification, data portability rights, data protection impact assessment and designing based on privacy.

The implementation is through a new initiative introduced as Personal Data Protection and Privacy Regulatory Sandbox.

“This is a sign of dedication and commitment by Futurise in fostering a culture of innovation, cooperation and compliance in the field of personal data protection with PDP. In addition, both parties will also cooperate in digitizing the management process through the Personal Data Protection portal.

“All users can carry out online transactions for the new registration process under the data protection officer, data impact assessment and data breach notification who have their respective roles,” he explained.

Menwhile, PDP Commissioner Professor Dr Mohd Nazri Kama said, the collaboration is the first initiative implemented by the PDP in 2024 in the statistical effort of the personal protection plan 2010 or Act 709.

“This initiative is also one of several MoUs implemented to support the act. This amendment is expected to be presented this year taking into account suggestions from all ministries, government agencies, industry players. I express my deepest appreciation to Futurise for their trust and willingness to establish a strategic partnership for two years from 2024 to 2026,” he said.
