CelcomDigi, Yinson Partnership Launches Malaysia’s First Lease-to-Own E-Motorcycles

CelcomDigi and Yinson, have joined forces to launch Malaysia’s first-ever lease-to-own e-motorcycles. The initiative, unveiled at the rydeEV Experience Centre, introduced an innovative approach to e-mobility, making electric motorcycles not only accessible but also affordable for Malaysians.

The launch event, graced by YB Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade & Industry, marks a significant stride towards Malaysia’s net-zero goals by 2050.

The partnership positions itself as a prime example of private sector participation in fostering sustainable practices and driving the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

“Our nation has seen a significant increase in EV and hybrid vehicle sales over the past years, indicating a growing interest and acceptance of EVs among Malaysians.” he said

Tengku Zafrul highlighted the escalating interest and acceptance of EVs in Malaysia. The EV and e-motorcycle industry have witnessed substantial growth, with EV sales soaring from approximately 3,000 units in 2021 to an impressive 10,000 units in 2023.

The e-motorcycle segment, though small, demonstrated a remarkable 318% growth in 2023, indicating a burgeoning market with high growth potential.

To address the evolving landscape, the Minister discussed the government’s proactive approach, citing the establishment of the National EV Task Force (NEVTF) and the National EV Steering Committee (NEVSC).

“MITI has established the National EV Task Force (NEVTF) to promote the adoption of EVs, expand EV charging infrastructure, and drive
investments within the EV ecosystem.” he added.

He emphasised the need for a safe and systematically developed ecosystem and acknowledged challenges like range anxiety. The government is committed to developing infrastructure, with a target of 10,000 EV chargers by 2025.

“We need a safe and systematically developed ecosystem to properly grow our EV industry. Real positive impact requires not just strong policies, but also meaningful private sector participation.” Tengku Zafrul said.

Tengku Zafrul also highlighted key budget measures supporting the EV industry, including a RM2,400 cash rebate for e-motorcycle purchases. He also commended SIRIM’s initiatives, reinforcing the government’s dedication to the systematic development of the EV ecosystem.

The Minister emphasised the importance of private sector partnerships, leading to the unveiling of CelcomDigi and Yinson’s unique initiative. The collaborative effort, described as “Buy a telco plan, get an EV bike,” introduces lease-to-own e-motorcycles with postpaid plans, promoting affordability and environmental consciousness.

He also expressed optimism about Malaysia’s EV industry, highlighting MITI’s pro-business stance and commitment to sustainable growth and congratulated CelcomDigi and Yinson on their pioneering product offering, underscoring its role in steering Malaysia towards a greener, more sustainable future.

“Congratulations again to CelcomDigi and Yinson on this unique product offering.”
