Selangor Achieves 95.9% 5G Coverage But Industry Uptake Lags Behind, Says Fahmi

Selangor, a hub for industries and SMEs, has successfully attained a commendable 95.9% 5G network coverage as of December, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. While lauding the achievement, he highlighted the feedback received from telecom companies, indicating a significant underutilization of the 5G advantages.

Fahmi expressed concern over the industry’s sluggish adoption of the 5G network, revealing that many companies have not fully harnessed its potential for industrial purposes.

“One of the problems faced is the usage rate among industries, where it is found that many companies and industry players have not fully utilised the 5G network for industrial purposes.” he said.

“In this regard, I, together with Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and the Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, will continue to engage with industry players, especially in industrial areas, to ensure they make the best use of this facility.” he added.

During a briefing presentation on the 5G rollout, Fahmi conveyed these insights to Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin during their visit to the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) headquarters.

Fahmi emphasised the Ministry’s commitment, facilitated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to ensuring an effective nationwide 5G rollout. He urged industry players to embrace the transition from 4G to the more efficient and interconnected 5G networks capable of connecting around 1,000 devices in a single connection.

Despite achieving approximately eight million 5G-supporting devices out of 45 million mobile phone user accounts in Malaysia by November, Fahmi encouraged further utilisation, especially in states with high industrial activities like Selangor.

The collaborative efforts of the government and industry players are expected to propel Selangor and the nation towards a more technologically advanced and interconnected future.
