New Agong Sworn In

In a ceremony steeped in tradition and regal splendor, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Johor was sworn in today as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia’s new King. The coronation ceremony took place at Istana Negara, with dignitaries, Malay Rulers, and representatives from across the nation witnessing this significant moment.

Sultan Ibrahim, aged 65, ascended to the federal throne for a five-year term, following his election during the 263rd (Special) Meeting of the Conference of Rulers in October last year. In this unique rotational system, nine Malay Rulers take turns holding the esteemed position of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

At the same ceremony, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, took the oath of office as the Deputy King, marking another crucial moment in the constitutional monarchy of Malaysia.

The Balairung Seri witnessed the solemn oaths and signing of instruments of office by both Sultan Ibrahim and Sultan Nazrin Shah. The Malay Rulers from various states, along with dignitaries from the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches, attended the grand event, enhancing the regal ambiance.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim played a key role, officially proclaiming Sultan Ibrahim’s ascension to the federal throne in accordance with the laws and the Federal Constitution. The momentous occasion was further adorned with recitation of prayers led by Istana Negara Religious Officer Datuk Munir Md Salleh, seeking blessings for Their Majesties, the people, and the nation.

Malaysia, one of 43 nations with a constitutional monarchy, holds a unique place globally with its rotational system of electing a King. Sultan Ibrahim’s reign as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong begins today, succeeding Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Alhaj of Pahang, whose five-year term concluded yesterday.

The grandeur of the ceremony and the continuity of this time-honored tradition reflect Malaysia’s commitment to its rich cultural heritage and constitutional monarchy.
