In response to alarming assertions made by a senior lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia’s School of Medical Sciences, Dr. Zulkifli Mustafa, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will be launching an investigation into the authenticity of honey products available in Malaysia. The claim suggested that a staggering 90% of honey sold in the country, including stingless bee honey, may be counterfeit.
Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who serves as both the Minister of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and the Member of Parliament for Papar, responded to the report, expressing deep concern over the potential prevalence of fake honey in the market. He highlighted the significant threats and challenges posed by counterfeit products, particularly in terms of consumer health and safety.
According to a local news portal, Armizan has instructed the ministry’s enforcement division to collaborate with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to gather further information on the matter. Laboratory testing will be crucial in distinguishing genuine honey from counterfeit ones, as authentic honey offers various benefits in terms of content, efficacy, and quality.
