The state government will install 2,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras equipped with 5G technology across Selangor in a bid to enhance safety and ensure a better monitoring system.
State executive councillor for innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah said the state administration will allocate between RM20 million and RM25 million to install the video surveillance system, which is expected to be fully completed by 2026.
“The advantage of 5G coverage is its ability to enhance mobile broadband with very high upload and download speeds.
“I believe this will provide a great opportunity for us to use more CCTV-based monitoring technology and digital imagery.
“In this regard, the state government plans to install 2,000 CCTV cameras statewide,” he said after visiting Digital Nasional Bhd’s (DNB) My5G Portal at The Exchange 106 today.
Fahmi said with 5G abilities in the CCTV system, monitoring tasks can be automated, eliminating the need for authorities to be constantly stationed in front of the screens.
“The project has actually kicked off, and it is expected to be completed in 2026. Currently, it is being operated by the State Economic Planning Unit.
Fahmi said the state has yet to finalise the full locations for the new CCTVs as it requires discussions with the local authorities.
However, places with safety, pollution and public hygiene-related issues will be given primary focus.
On the 5G coverage in Selangor, the councillor said it currently stands at 96 per cent, with the remaining 1,850 areas expected to be fully covered by next year.
Priority will be given to regions with lower 5G coverage, including Petaling Jaya and Sepang.
