Losses Of RM0.8 Billion Caused By Floods Recorded In Malaysia In 2023: DOSM

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) conducted a special survey to assess the impact of floods that occurred in Malaysia in 2023. The assessment covered the period from January to December 2023, and all states were affected during that year.

Today (Mac 11), DOSM) released a Special Report On The Impact Of Floods In Malaysia 2023. This report presents the impact of floods in Malaysia during 2023, including case studies from several areas on the east coast and in the southern states, as well as socio-economic statistics at the district level.

Chief Statistician of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin said, “This study aims to evaluate the total loss and damage caused by the floods that hit Malaysia in 2023. These losses include the value of damage to living quarters, vehicles, businesses, and industrial premises.

“Data from relevant government agencies were used for assessing damage to the agricultural industry and public assets & infrastructure.”

In terms of data collection, DOSM conducted face-to-face interview in affected area using questionnaire besides observation and telephone call methods. DOSM also used administrative data that were obtained from various agencies such as National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (JKM), Ministry of Plantation and Commodity (KPK), Ministry of Education (KPM), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysia Civil Defence Department (APM), Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), State Government, District Offices, Temporary Evacuation Centres, The Village Community Management Council, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO).

This allowed DOSM to collect a more comprehensive data.

The Chief Statistician explained, “Overall losses due to floods were RM0.8 billion (2022: RM1.0 billion) which equivalent 0.04 per cent (2022: 0.06 per cent) against nominal Gross Domestic Product. Living quarters losses amounted to RM168.3 million (2022: RM157.4 million), vehicles RM22.3 million (2022: RM18.8 million), manufacturing RM10.3 million (2022: RM8.7 million), business premises RM53.2 million (2022: RM50.3 million), agriculture RM120.6 million (2022: RM154.5 million), and public assets & infrastructure RM380.7 million (2022: RM636.8 million).”

In terms of living quarters, Johor recorded the highest losses of RM121.9 million, followed by Kelantan RM15.4 million, and Sabah RM11.0 million.

For Johor, the districts that registered the highest living quarters losses were Batu Pahat amounted to RM89.2 million, followed by Segamat RM18.3 million, and Muar RM7.1 million. In Kelantan, Pasir Mas district reported the highest losses of living quarters with RM11.5 million, followed by Tanah Merah RM1.3 million, and Tumpat RM1.0 million.

Next, Kota Marudu and Pitas recorded the highest living quarters losses for Sabah amounting to RM4.8 million respectively, followed by the districts of Kudat and Telupid, which registered RM0.4 million each. For vehicles,

Dr. Mohd Uzir said, “The three states that reported the highest losses were Johor RM15.9 million, Selangor RM1.8 million, and Sabah RM1.6 million. The districts that recorded the highest losses for vehicle damage in Johor were Batu Pahat, with RM12.3 million, followed by Segamat RM1.2 million, and Muar RM1.1 million.

“Meanwhile, Petaling in Selangor registered the highest vehicle damage losses amounting RM1.8 million, while the rest of the districts had losses of less than RM0.1 million.

“Kota Marudu recorded the highest losses for Sabah RM1.2 million, followed by Pitas RM0.3 million, and Kudat RM0.1 million.”

In terms of manufacturing sector, Johor recorded losses, with RM10.3 million. Segamat had the highest manufacturing losses of RM9.5 million and followed by Johor Bahru RM0.8 million.

Next was Muar with value less than RM100.0 thousand.

He added, “Johor was the highest state recorded for business premises losses, amounted RM29.8 million. The highest losses for business premises in Johor district was Segamat RM25.6 million, followed by Batu Pahat RM3.2 million. Next were Muar and Tangkak with total loss of RM0.2 million, respectively.

“Kelantan was the second highest for business premises losses, with RM19.8 million, and followed by Terengganu RM2.9 million. For Kelantan, Pasir Mas was the highest amounted RM15.1 million, followed by Tanah Merah RM1.7 million, and Tumpat RM0.9 million.

“While in Terengganu, the business premises losses in Hulu Terengganu were RM0.9 million and followed by Kuala Nerus RM0.5 million. Next were Setiu and Kuala Terengganu with total loss of RM0.4 million, respectively.”
