Govt Yet To Propose Social Media Platform Regulation Act, Says Fahmi Fadzi

Following yesterday’s announcement regarding the collaboration between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and major telecommunications providers to restrict social media access for children under 15, Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil has clarified that the government has not yet proposed the creation of a Social Media Platform Regulation Act.

While addressing concerns about children’s online safety during yesterday’s (Mar 13) Dewan Rakyat sitting, Fahmi emphasised that the focus remains on parental supervision and the implementation of parental control tools to monitor and regulate children’s online activities.

These tools, introduced in collaboration with CelcomDigi, Maxis, UMobile, Telekom Malaysia (TM), and TIME, aim to empower parents or guardians to filter and limit online content accessed by their children.

Acknowledging the age restrictions set by social media platforms, which require users to be at least 13 years old, the government underscored the importance of parental involvement in ensuring compliance and safeguarding children’s online experiences.
