Dewan Rakyat Focuses On Taxation Review, Social Assistance In Last Day Of Session

In the final day of the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament, Malaysian lawmakers directed their attention towards critical economic and social matters, with a particular focus on taxation reform and social assistance programs.

During the Dewan Rakyat sitting, Members of Parliament raised pressing questions regarding the nation’s taxation structure and the effectiveness of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) program.

Representing Parit, Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib of the Perikatan Nasional coalition queried the Finance Ministry about its efforts in reevaluating the current taxation framework, emphasizing the need for adjustments in light of ongoing economic changes.

Similarly, Zahari Kechik from Jeli sought clarification from the Finance Minister regarding the recipients and disbursement of funds under the SARA initiative, shedding light on the program’s impact and reach.

Meanwhile, Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli of Jempol addressed the Home Minister, inquiring about the progress of the pilot project for the single border agency (SBA), designed to oversee Malaysia’s 141 entry points. He also sought details on the anticipated commencement date for this new agency, highlighting its significance in ensuring border security and efficiency.

Following the question and answer session, the Dewan Rakyat proceeded with the tabling of crucial bills aimed at addressing contemporary challenges. Among these were the Cyber Security Bill 2024 and the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024, both slated for their second reading.

Today’s session marked the culmination of a 19-day parliamentary gathering that commenced on February 26. Throughout its duration, legislators deliberated on various legislative matters crucial to the nation’s progress and welfare.
