Fed Government Takes Over Mutiara Penang LRT Line, Says Loke

The Federal Government has officially taken over the Penang Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project from the state government, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke today.

Loke said the decision was reached following the Cabinet’s decision to approve the proposed development of the project on March 22.

“Officially, the government has decided to appoint MRT Corp, a company 100 percent owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated (MoF Inc) as the developer and asset owner.

The implementation of this project will be done through an open tender while procurement will be divided into three main components,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today (Mar 29).

He said the three components in question are the contract for civil construction works for Segment 1, which is the alignment of Pulau Silikon to Komtar; the contract for civil construction for Segment 2 which is the line from Komtar to Penang Sentral as well as the ‘turnkey’ contract for system and stockcar works on a build-maintain-move (BMT) basis.
