MSIA To Court Dutch Semiconductor Companies For Investments

The Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) is embarking on a mission to the Netherlands to court Dutch semiconductor companies for investments. Concurrently, amidst global relocation trends, an increasing number of Chinese semiconductor firms are expressing interest in establishing operations in Malaysia.

Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai, President of MSIA, underscored the pivotal role of Malaysia as a preferred investment destination for semiconductor companies eyeing future growth opportunities, particularly fueled by the exponential rise in the utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) in semiconductor chips.

Following constructive discussions with potential Dutch investors exploring prospects in the semiconductor sector within the Asia-Pacific region, Wong emphasised the significance of showcasing Malaysia’s attributes to attract high-value companies, thereby enhancing the nation’s semiconductor ecosystem.

The proactive stance of MSIA aligns with recent developments such as the establishment of a cutting-edge manufacturing facility by Dutch firm Neways in Klang, slated to commence production in the fourth quarter of 2024. The investment signals growing confidence in Malaysia’s semiconductor landscape.

Wong also shed light on the influx of Chinese semiconductor companies relocating to Malaysia to mitigate production disruptions and circumvent US tariffs amid the US-China trade tensions. This trend presents Malaysia with an opportune moment to capitalise on geopolitical dynamics and position itself as a favorable investment destination.

With projections indicating semiconductor revenue soaring to a remarkable US$1 trillion (RM4.7 trillion) by 2030, driven by pervasive integration of semiconductors in various facets of daily life, Malaysia stands poised to harness this growth trajectory.

Wong highlighted the strategic shift of US companies relocating from China and Chinese firms seeking alternative production bases, underscoring Malaysia’s favorable positioning amidst evolving global trade dynamics.
