Asia Lacks Cybersecurity Culture

KnowBe4’s 2024 Security Culture Report revealed a concerning trend in Asia, where only a handful of countries and industries meet the global security culture average.

With scores ranging from 65 to 72, countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand fall short of the global standard, indicating a pervasive lack of awareness and appreciation for security culture importance.

According to the report, in contrast, highly regulated industries like Government, Energy and Utilities, and Banking emerge as frontrunners in security culture, boasting scores exceeding 73. Conversely, industries like Construction, Legal, and Education lag behind, with scores as low as 68 and 69, highlighting areas ripe for improvement.

KnowBe4, Security Awareness Advocate, Dr. Martin Kraemer expressed concern over Asia’s vulnerability to cyber threats amidst rapid digital growth and a surge in new tech users. He emphasised the urgency for organisations to prioritise the development and maintenance of robust security cultures, viewing it as a critical business imperative in today’s cyber landscape.

The report further addresses the growing attention towards artificial intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity, emphasising its potential to enhance defensive measures against evolving threats.

While bad actors may exploit AI to create sophisticated tactics, the core structure of cyberattacks remains unchanged, necessitating a continued focus on traditional signs of social engineering to combat emerging threats effectively.

KnowBe4’s 2024 Security Culture Report is a comprehensive analysis sheds light on the critical role of cybersecurity measures in organisations and their impact on human behavior in the workplace.

Defined by KnowBe4 as the amalgamation of ideas, customs, and social behaviors shaping an organisation’s security landscape, “security culture” serves as a cornerstone in reducing human-related cybersecurity risks. The report underscores the collective mindset, practices, and norms that influence how organizations prioritize and approach security measures.

In conclusion, KnowBe4’s 2024 Security Culture Report underscores the pressing need for organisations across Asia to invest in internal security awareness programs and collaborative efforts to fortify their cybersecurity postures, safeguarding against evolving cyber threats in the digital age.
