IMF Current MD Remains Only Nominee For Post

The Board Coordinators of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced Thursday that the current managing director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, is the only candidate for the position.

“The period for submitting nominations for the position of the next Managing Director closed on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. One candidate, the current Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, has been nominated,” according to a statement.

Georgieva’s current five-year term ends on Sept. 30.

“The Board’s goal is to complete the selection process as soon as possible, and at the latest by end-April, 2024,” the statement read.

The IMF’s managing director is both chairperson of the Executive Board and head of IMF staff. He or she is appointed by the Executive Board for a renewable term of five years.

The Executive Board may select a managing director by a majority of votes cast. In the past, the board has made such appointments by consensus
