LPP Plans Additional Quotas For Local White Rice Amid Market Concerns

The Farmers’ Organisation Board (LPP) has announced its intention to address concerns over rice shortages in the market by seeking additional quotas for local white rice (BPT).

LPP Director-General, Datuk Azulita Salim revealed that the decision to augment the quota would be based on demand. Presently, LPP is allocated a quota of 2,500 metric tonnes per month until the end of the year for marketing purposes.

Azulita emphasised that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has entrusted LPP, in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), with the task of marketing local white rice as an intervention measure.

In light of the challenges in accessing white rice in the market, Azulita underscored that discussions have been held regarding potential quota adjustments if the current allocation of 2,500 metric tonnes proves inadequate.

The announcement was made following Azulita’s address at the Opening Ceremony of the Farmers’ Outlet of the Farmers’ Organization of the State (PPN) of Perak, which was attended by PPN Chairman Datuk Sham Mat Sahat.

The BPT quota will be made available through all Farmers’ Outlets nationwide at a price of RM26 for every 10 kilograms, aiming to improve public access.

“We have commenced the marketing of BPT at Farmers’ Outlets and local farmers’ shops, with plans to expand distribution to the Peladang Premium Outlet in Perak under PPN Perak,” Azulita said.

Azulita also highlighted that the inauguration of the first Peladang Premium Outlet in Perak showcased high-quality products from PPN entrepreneurs.

Moreover, Peladang Premium Outlets are operational in Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, and Penang, contributing to enhanced accessibility to quality agricultural products across various regions.
