Malaysia Launches Southeast Asia’s Largest IC Design Park

Malaysia through the initiative of the Selangor State Government, is spearheading to build the largest integrated circuit design park in Southeast Asia.

The “Malaysia Semiconductor Accelerator & IC Design Park: Selangor Hub.” will position Malaysia as a potential powerhouse in the global IC Design Industry.

So far the IC Design Park has secured the commitment of four influential partners:
● ARM Ltd
● Phison Malaysia (MaiStorage),
● SkyeChip Sdn Bhd,
● Shenzhen Semiconductor Industry Association

This initiative not only strengthens Malaysia’s global industry ties but also boosts innovation, skill development, and technological independence, contributing significantly to the nation’s long-term economic resilience. ARM Ltd, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, is a major force in the global semiconductor industry. They specialise in providing intellectual property (IP) cores and related technologies for processors, the brains of modern electronic devices. By licensing their designs to over 1,000 global partners like Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung, ARM’s energy-efficient technology plays a critical role in enabling the long battery life we expect from smartphones and tablets. However, ARM doesn’t manufacture chips themselves – they focus on creating the blueprints that power these devices.

The Malaysia Semiconductor Accelerator & IC Design Park: Selangor Hub is strategically located in a 45,000 square foot MSC Status Class A Business Building in Puchong—with potential expansion to 60,000 square feet—the IC Design Park is poised to
begin operations by July 2024. This state-of-the-art facility has been meticulously designed to accommodate four to six local and international IC design companies and is expected to employ at least 300 local IC design engineers.

The IC Design Park will be equipped with common public service tools and facilities, including affordable Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, servers, Intellectual Property (IP), Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) services, and training programs. The primary goal of the park is to promote Original Design Manufacturing (ODM), encouraging local involvement in product
design, prototyping, and production—shifting from “Made in Malaysia” to “Made by Malaysia.”
