PM Reprimands Immigration Over Congestion At Airports

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, today criticized the Immigration Department for congestion issues at the country’s borders, particularly in airports. He compared his rebuke to “parental love” and hopes that the department can improve the situation at counters handling entry of tourists. He emphasised that tourists would not accept excuses for delays and that he expects the issue to be dealt with effectively.

Anwar stated that the sudden surge in the number of tourists has made Malaysia a popular destination, with an increase of up to 80% in the early months of this year, putting pressure on agencies. He said that the Home Ministry discusses the issue almost every day to find solutions and that he is confident that there will be some “game changer” announcements soon to facilitate arrivals and prevent congestion.

Although there are limitations, the PM’s determination is such that there is nothing that cannot be tried to find a way out, he concluded. Malaysia expects over 27 million tourist visits this year, with a rise especially from the Asian region.
