Minister Of Communications Fahmi Fadzil was also pleased to announce that Malaysia will assume the chairmanship of ASEAN next year. As the chair of ASEAN in 2025, Malaysia will strive to invigorate ASEAN-led forums and achieve significant milestones.

“In 2015, ASEAN leaders envisioned the ASEAN Community as a unit that was ‘politically cohesive, economically integrated, and socially responsible,’ designed to address both the challenges and opportunities of the future.

‘This vision was set with a 10-year timeframe, which concludes next year. As this period nears its end, it prompts us to consider what the next decade holds for ASEAN,” Fahmi said  at the launch of the first International Regulatory Conference 2024 (IRC 2024), two-day conference today (May 6).

What strategies and goals will define the future trajectory of the region?

In ASEAN, the vision is for a community that is peaceful, stable, and resilient, capable of effectively responding to challenges, and positioned as an outward-looking region within the global community while maintaining ASEAN’s centrality.

“To address both current and future challenges and trends from within and outside the region, we propose to develop an inspiring, inclusive and forward-looking post-2025 vision for the ASEAN Community, spanning the next 20 years. Additionally, there is a sincere hope that Malaysia, in collaboration with other ASEAN countries, will strive for better regulation and work closely together as a regional bloc.

The regional regulatory framework on online safety as mentioned earlier, is anticipated to facilitate coordination and collaboration among ASEAN member states in addressing common challenges related to online safety, as well as building regional consensus on ASEAN’s commitment to safeguarding the digital environment.

With that aspiration, “let us channel our collective efforts towards fostering a more integrated and resilient ASEAN. By collaborating effectively and embracing the innovative regulatory practices, we can ensure a brighter, more secure future for all our nations,” Fahmi said.
