Dewan Negara Speaker Datuk Mutang Tagal Passes Away

The Speaker of the Dewan Negara, Datuk Mutang Tagal (pic. left) passed away at 11.46am today (May 10) at the National Heart Institute (IJN), Kuala Lumpur.

The matter was informed by the Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly in a statement today.

It is understood that the deceased received treatment at the IJN upon his arrival in Malaysia on May 6 last from Azerbaijan for an official work visit.

“More information regarding his funeral and honour ceremony will be announced later. The family of the deceased expresses a thousand thanks for the condolences and prayers given and appreciates the time given to them in facing this difficult time,” the statement read.

Earlier, Mutang Tagal, 70, was elected as the 20th Speaker of the National Assembly and was sworn in at the National Assembly on 19 February 2024. He was the first Orang Ulu to be appointed Speaker of the Dewan Negara and had served as a Member of Parliament for Bukit Mas, Sarawak from 1982 to 1990.

He has an educational and practical background in the field of law and he left behind a wife and three children.
