MACC Azam Baki Reappointed MACC Chief

Tan Sri Azam Baki has been reappointed as the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), effective this Friday.

The announcement was made by the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, in a statement today.

He said the reappointment of Azam is for a period of one year and has been consented to by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

“In accordance with subsections 5(1) and (2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the reappointment of Tan Sri Azam Baki as the Chief Commissioner of the MACC.

“The appointment is for a period of one year effective May 12, 2023,” he said.

Azam, born on May 12, 1963 in Negeri Sembilan, began his career at the Anti-Corruption Agency (now known as MACC) in 1984.

Azam’s first position in the agency was as an assistant investigation officer, and he has also served as an intelligence officer, prosecution officer, as well as engaging in community education activities.

He assumed the position of Chief Commissioner of the MACC on May 9, 2020, replacing Latheefa Beebi Koya, who decided to shorten her contract in line with subsection 5(3) of the MACC Act 2009.

Azam held the position during the administrations of three Prime Ministers, namely Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Azam holds a diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), a Bachelor of Laws (Jurisprudence) from the University of Malaya, and a master’s degree from Asia E-University.
