A collaborative effort has been initiated between the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), supported by the Energy Commission (ST) to address corruption issues and enhance the management of the nation’s electricity assets.
This initiative is a proactive step aimed at addressing electricity theft, a critical issue that poses significant risks to the country’s strategic assets. By implementing these measures, the goal is to mitigate risks associated with theft and ensure stability in the nation’s electricity supply, offering assurance to both the Malaysian Government and consumers.
Tan Sri Datuk Sri Azam Baki, Chief Commissioner of SPRM, highlighted the importance of these measures in reducing losses and ensuring the sustainability of the nation’s electricity supply management. He emphasised the readiness of SPRM to collaborate with TNB to identify weaknesses and improve systems and asset management governance, thereby closing opportunities for corruption.
Among the initiatives introduced is the installation of security measures such as barrel locks and keyless biometric systems at high-risk consumer premises and electrical substations. TNB plans to procure 5,000 barrel lock units in 2024 and selectively install 3,000 keyless biometric systems. Additionally, online CCTV installations will be implemented in high-risk areas to strengthen supervision and control over strategic national assets.
At a recent signing ceremony held at the Leo Moggie Convention Center, TNB Headquarters in Bangsar, key stakeholders, including Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, President/Chief Executive Officer of TNB, and Dato’ Ir. Ts. Abdul Razib Dawood, Chief Executive Officer of ST, signed a cooperation document to enhance governance and management of electricity assets in Malaysia.
