MyIPO And WIPO Launch Creative Economy Data Model Aimed At Supporting Policy Formulation

The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has launched the Creative Economy Data Model (CEDM) aimed at enhancing the development of the creative economy by using comprehensive and systematic data to support policy formulation, development planning and the measurement of the sector’s economic impact through evidence-based policymaking.

The initiative builds on the long-standing collaboration between MyIPO and WIPO, which began with the Malaysia Copyright-Based Industries Study conducted in 2008. The study was the country’s first benchmark for measuring the contribution of copyright-based industries to the national economy.

MyIPO noted that the creative economy has evolved considerably over the past two decades, driven by digital transformation, new business models and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. The CEDM is designed to complement existing measurement frameworks by capturing the increasingly dynamic value chain of the creative economy.

According to the 2024 Culture and Creative Satellite Account published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), Malaysia’s creative economy contributed 6.8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to approximately RM130.7 billion, while supporting more than 760,000 jobs.

The figures underscore the growing importance of the creative economy as one of Malaysia’s strategic sectors for economic growth and employment.

As the agency responsible for leading Malaysia’s intellectual property system, MyIPO said it will continue serving as a facilitator in strengthening the country’s creative economy ecosystem through close collaboration with WIPO, government ministries, agencies, industry players and academic institutions.

The corporation said the collaborative approach is expected to reinforce Malaysia’s position as a nation that leverages intellectual property, creativity and innovation as key drivers of sustainable economic growth.

The CEDM initiative is also aligned with the aspirations of MyIPO NextGen Strategic Plan, which focuses on promoting an innovation-driven economy, accelerating the commercialisation of intellectual property and enhancing the competitiveness of Malaysia’s creative industries.
