Not An Offence If Contract Awarded Has Nothing To Do With Youth Ministry

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has stated that there is no connection between the awarding of the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) pilot project contract by the Selangor state government and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, which was reported to involve her husband.

The commission’s chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, mentioned that, at present, there has been no wrongdoing according to the law following the award of the contract to Yeoh’s husband. He explained that it is not considered an offense when a person receives a contract or benefit from any government entity, as long as the individual has no involvement in the duties and responsibilities related to the contract.

For example, in the case of Hannah Yeoh’s husband receiving a contract from Selangor, since the minister has no connection to the state government, it does not constitute an offense. However, Tan Sri Azam Baki noted that it would be different if the contract was awarded by the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Last week, state executive councillor Ng Sze Han mentioned that Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd was one of the two companies selected for the DRT pilot project, which is a state government initiative to enhance public transport and mobility services in Selangor.

Despite this clarification, there has been criticism regarding whether the Youth Minister’s direct or indirect influence played a part in awarding the contract to her husband.
