In a landmark move that promises to deepen the technological ties between Malaysia and India, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has been praised for his instrumental role in facilitating a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) and India’s premier IT industry body, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), recently.

The MoU between PIKOM and NASSCOM essentially aims to nurture collaborative growth in the technology trade between Malaysia and India. The agreement focuses on several key areas, including the mutual exchange of information on industry landscapes, organising events to promote greater collaboration between tech companies in both countries and inviting industry experts to share insights and strategies for growth.

Additionally, the MoU will create networking opportunities for joint research and development (R&D) and go-to-market strategies, while establishing a Special Interest Group to streamline joint industry efforts in Malaysia.

E-Commerce Malaysia Chair Ganesh Kumar Bangah described the MoU as ‘historic’, stating that it goes beyond a mere partnership and serves as a bridge between two dynamic tech ecosystems.

“With Minister Gobind’s leadership, we are now strategically positioned to harness India’s expertise and innovation, creating an environment ripe for mutual growth and collaboration,” he said.

“The opportunities this MoU unlocks for our industries are immense. It is a forward-thinking initiative that strengthens our bilateral ties while enhancing Malaysia’s standing as a formidable player in the global technology landscape,” added Ganesh.

Meanwhile, PIKOM Chairman Ong Chin Seong said that the MoU ‘brings to life the Minister’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration, which will undoubtedly benefit our tech sector in the long run.”

“The opportunities for growth and development that this MoU presents are immense, and we have Minister Gobind to thank for making this possible,” added Ong.

“We are indeed thrilled to strengthen our cooperation with NASSCOM through this MoU. Just as the relationship between Malaysia and India has evolved over the years, we aspire to grow this to a stronger comprehensive strategic partnership. Through knowledge sharing and joint initiatives, we aim to create a more vibrant and interconnected ecosystem,” Ong further said.

Besides the PIKOM-NASSCOM MoU, Minister Gobind also spearheaded another significant collaboration for the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) with NASSCOM. This additional MoU aims to further strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional digital hub by fostering closer ties with Indian tech companies.

Digital Global Business Services Council Malaysia (GBS Malaysia) Chair Anthony Raja said that this development is set to facilitate joint promotional activities to raise awareness of Malaysia’s robust digital ecosystem, assist Malaysian tech companies in understanding the Indian market and promote talent development through the exchange of ideas and best practices between the two nations.

“This collaboration is expected to open new avenues for market access, enabling smoother entry for Indian tech companies into Malaysia while supporting their high-skilled worker mobility and easing visa processes. By doing so, Malaysia reinforces its reputation as a strong investment destination in the Asia-Pacific region, driving further growth for our country’s digital economy,” added Anthony. GBS Malaysia is a chapter of PIKOM.

“Both MoUs represents a significant step forward in our efforts to position Malaysia as a premier digital hub in the region. Under Minister Gobind’s leadership, we are not only opening doors for Indian tech companies but also creating opportunities for Malaysian businesses to expand their footprint in India.

“This is a win-win for both nations, and we are excited about the possibilities this collaboration will unlock for our digital ecosystem,” Anthony further said.

These strategic partnerships highlight Malaysia’s growing influence in the global digital landscape, as leaders like Minister Gobind forge stronger international ties and enhance the nation’s digital ecosystem. The MoUs certainly represent key steps in positioning Malaysia as a leading digital economy in the Asia-Pacific region, opening new avenues for growth and collaboration.
