Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed concern over escalating tensions between the US and China but emphasized that Malaysia will not be forced to choose sides. In an interview with RIA Novosti and RT, reported by Sputnik, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with both global powers.
“Yes, there is concern because of this heightening tension between the US and China, but we cannot be forced to take sides,” Anwar stated during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, Russia.
Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s significant trade and investment ties with the US while acknowledging China as an equally important partner. He affirmed that Malaysia is engaging with both countries comprehensively in various sectors.
Addressing broader geopolitical dynamics, Anwar said it is not in Malaysia’s interest to align with the West against Russia. He stressed that Malaysia seeks peaceful resolutions and values its good relations with all parties.
“Our intention, our position is to find a resolution, not to take a side of the West against Russia. What benefit is this for us?” he questioned, maintaining Malaysia’s stance of neutrality.
The Prime Minister also expressed Malaysia’s opposition to any military buildup aimed at aggression. “Our position is for peace, and therefore we do not support any sort of enhancement of defence and armaments to attack any country.”
The EEF, running from Tuesday through Friday, is being hosted by Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, with Sputnik serving as its general information partner.
