AirAsia Launches Direct Flights To Shenzhen From Penang

Penang Global Tourism has announced the launch of a new direct flight route between Penang and Shenzhen, commencing on Oct 28 2024. This service aims to enhance connectivity between Malaysia and China, promoting cultural, economic, and tourism exchanges.

A welcoming ceremony for the inaugural flight was held on Oct 29 2024 at 9:00 am at Penang International Airport. The event was attended by Wong Hong Wai, Chairman of the Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, AirAsia representatives, key tourism stakeholders, and media members.

The Penang-Shenzhen route will operate four times weekly, providing greater convenience for travellers. Penang, known for its rich cultural heritage and world-class cuisine, is expected to see an increase in tourists from Shenzhen, one of China’s major economic hubs.

Wong Hong Wai expressed enthusiasm for the new connection, stating, “This direct route between Penang and Shenzhen presents incredible opportunities for both cities, not just in tourism but also in deepening cultural and business exchanges. Penang has long been a melting pot of cultures, and this new connection will further cement its position as a top international destination.”

Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra, Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia, added, “We are pleased to witness the launch of another new route to China… We strongly believe we can attract more Chinese tourists to the city, especially with the government’s visa-free initiative for up to 15 days, valid until the end of next year.”

As Penang enhances its status as a key destination for cultural exchange and tourism, this direct flight is expected to bolster economic ties and position Penang as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
