In this second part interview series with Philippine ambassador to Malaysia, Her Excellency Maria Angela Ponce was asked to give her view on the the upcoming ASEAN summit in KL next year and the position both nations play as the founding member of this very important bloc in this region.
Madam Maria noted “Looking ahead, Malaysia’s upcoming role as Chair of ASEAN presents a critical opportunity to elevate economic cooperation within the region. As one of the founding members of ASEAN and a major economic player, Malaysia is poised to steer the region’s collective priorities, with a strong focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and digital economy’ she said. The Philippines, Madam Maria said which will assume the ASEAN Chair after Malaysia, has already expressed its support for these priorities.
Clearly, the key to ASEAN’s success lies in addressing the challenges that arose during the pandemic, particularly in the areas of supply chain continuity, digital transformation, and technological innovation. The Philippines Embassy emphasised the importance of building on Malaysia’s leadership, with a particular focus on sustainable economic growth and ensuring that the region remains a stable, attractive destination for global investment.
Lately the ASEAN group has been pushed to an uncomfortable situation with situation playing out in the South China Sea. Both the Philippines and China have been issuing statements on unlawful intrusion and unwarranted encounters around the waters of the Philippines and China.

Madam Maria noted that the Philippines continues to advocate for the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of disputes, Manila views ASEAN as central to maintaining stability in the region. The Philippines emphasized the need for transparency and cooperation among all ASEAN members in addressing any disputes in the South China Sea, Madam Maria added.
She pointed out that the importance of the South China Sea extends beyond geopolitical concerns—its role as a critical global trade route means that any instability in the region can have far-reaching economic consequences. Adding that the Philippines continues to call for the South China Sea to be viewed as a sea of peace, with disputes resolved in accordance with international law.
