Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), through Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maldives State Shipping to drive advancement in maritime education, training, and innovation, according to a press statement released by ALAM on Wednesday.
ALAM is Malaysia’s premier maritime education training facility operated and managed by the Malaysian Maritime Academy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MISC Group. During the 40-over-year period, ALAM trained more than 14,000 maritime professionals through its structured maritime training programmes, including full-mission simulators and specialised labs.
Maldives State Shipping, meanwhile, is a subsidiary of the State Trading Organisation which was established by the Maldivian government in 1964 (known as Athireemaafannu Trading Account then) and became a listed company in 2001.
This strategic collaboration aims to address the evolving demand of the maritime industry for maritime professionals through industry-focused training and groundbreaking research initiatives.
The collaboration includes a merit-based scholarship programme enabling successful applicants from the Maldives to access ALAM’s internationally recognised maritime curriculum, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and expert faculty. It also features enhanced training opportunity and internship with Maldives State Shipping, offering maritime trainees invaluable hands-on experience and practical industry exposure.
Additionally, ALAM and Maldives State Shipping will undertake collaborative research to tackle critical industry challenges and drive innovation.
“We are proud to collaborate with Maldives State Shipping to empower a new generation of seafarers and maritime leaders. The signing of today’s MoU marks a historic milestone for ALAM as we expand our reach beyond Southeast Asia for the first time… By crossing regional boundaries, this collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering global connections and advancing maritime education and innovation on a broader scale,” said Ts Dr Captain Manivannan Subramaniam, Chief Executive of ALAM.
In compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education (SDG 4) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), this alliance underscores the shared vision of ALAM and Maldives State Shipping in ensuring sustainability.
The MoU was formalised today in the presence of Mr Eddie Ahmad Khodzali, CEO of Malaysian Maritime Academy and Mr Ahmed Shareef, Managing Director & CEO of Maldives State Shipping.
The witnesses of the MoU signing were Her Excellency Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed, High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia, Captain Ahmed Zubair, Deputy Managing Director of Maldives State Shipping and Ts Capt Dr Manivannan Subramaniam, Chief Executive of ALAM.
