The Academy Awards concluded with several major wins this year. At the 97th Academy Awards, Anora, a dramatic comedy directed by Sean Baker, emerged as the top winner.
The film secured five Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. With these awards, writer-director-editor Sean Baker tied Walt Disney’s record for the most Oscars won in a single night.
Other big winners of the night include Dune: Part Two, which won Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, and Emilia Pérez, which also earned the Oscar for Best Original Song with “El Mal”. The award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling went to The Substance.
At the start of the Oscars ceremony, Netflix’s musical-crime drama hybrid Emilia Pérez led with 13 nominations. The Oz-set Wicked and The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor and architect, followed closely with 10 nods each.
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, aired live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The ceremony included 23 award categories and honoured victims and heroes of the recent Los Angeles wildfires.
Highlights of the awards ceremony included a performance by Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo plus a James Bond music tribute by Doja Cat, Lisa of Blackpink, and Raye. There was also a heartfelt homage to Quincy Jones led by Queen Latifah, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah Winfrey.
