Germany’s newly appointed Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is set to make his first official visit to the US on June 5, where he will meet with US President Donald Trump, officials from both governments confirmed on May 31.
The high-stakes meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions between Berlin and Washington, with key issues on the agenda expected to include trade frictions, defence commitments and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Merz, who assumed office on May 6, is seen as a pro-business, transatlantic-oriented leader. His trip to Washington marks a pivotal moment in Germany’s foreign policy reset and will be closely watched for signals of how he intends to navigate relations with an increasingly assertive White House.
