The North-South Expressway (PLUS) will begin implementing a barrier-free open toll payment system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology from October, starting with a pilot project along the Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua stretch in Penang.
The system, backed by an integrated digital platform, enables users to pass through toll plazas without stopping, offering a smoother and more flexible driving experience.
“This system allows motorists to use any existing lane without the need to stop, promising a much more seamless journey. I personally tested the system today and it is significantly faster. There is no registration fee, and users are free to choose any toll lane,” said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi during a media demonstration of the ANPR system at Persada PLUS.
He added that the ANPR system marks a critical step towards the implementation of the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system within the next two years, aimed at reducing traffic congestion at toll plazas.
The system will first be tested at 13 toll plazas covering 35 lanes before gradually being extended across the entire PLUS network.
Developed by local highway industry experts, the system is fully industry-funded, with no financial implications for the government.
Using high-resolution cameras, the ANPR system identifies vehicle registration numbers and facilitates cashless toll payments. Users simply need to register online with their identification, vehicle details and preferred payment method.
Once a number plate is detected, toll charges will be deducted automatically from the linked account. If the account lacks sufficient balance, the payment will be collected later from the registered vehicle owner.
Payments can also be made via the new JustGo app, which supports various payment options including e-wallets, bank cards and Touch ‘n Go.
Nanta reiterated that there are no costs or charges for the public to register or use the system.
