Cash amounting to RM170 million seized by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and believed to belong to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has officially become government property.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the development followed Ismail Sabri’s decision not to challenge the prosecution’s application to forfeit the cash.
“This means the money is now officially government property and the process of transferring it into the consolidated fund will begin today. It may be credited into the government’s account in the near future,” he told a press conference today.
Yesterday, the Sessions Court was informed that Ismail Sabri and his former political secretary, Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus, would not contest the forfeiture of more than RM169 million seized by MACC.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat told the court during mention proceedings before Judge Suzana Hussin that both respondents, through their lawyers, had sent a letter dated August 28 to the court declaring their position.
