Johor Port Invests RM71.2 Million In New Quay Cranes To Boost Capacity

Johor Port Bhd, part of the MMC Group, has invested RM71.2 million in two new Post Panamax container quay cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC) to strengthen its container handling capabilities.

The cranes, built at ZPMC’s Changxing Island facility in Shanghai, are designed to manage Post Panamax vessels, enhancing vessel turnaround times and ensuring consistent operational reliability, the port said.

Johor Port CEO Md Derick Basir said the cranes reflect the port’s long-term vision to invest in modern infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of global trade. An additional two quay cranes are planned to be operational by 2027.

In June 2025, the port also acquired four new level luffing cranes for RM72.3 million for its conventional terminal. Johor Port chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said these investments form part of a five-year capital expenditure plan to enhance port operations.

The upgrades support the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiative, providing advanced infrastructure, improving cargo handling efficiency and attracting new business and investments to the zone, Che Khalib added.

Dzulfariqh Abdul Manap, vice-president of the Association of Malaysian Hauliers, said the modernisation efforts will improve berth productivity, reduce vessel and truck turnaround times and facilitate a smoother cargo-handling experience.

The procurement of the cranes began on May 6, 2024 and they were delivered on Sept 6, 2025. The equipment will undergo a 45-day testing period before becoming fully operational.
