Microsoft has announced new details of its upcoming cloud region in Johor Bahru, named Southeast Asia 3, aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) transformation across the region and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a digital economy leader.
The next-generation data centre region will deliver Microsoft’s most advanced cloud services to meet rising demand for secure and scalable infrastructure across Southeast Asia.
Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, said, “This milestone underscores Malaysia’s continued progress in the digital economy. We are pleased to collaborate with the industry and Microsoft as a trusted technology partner in building Malaysia’s leadership as a secure and reliable location for digital assets of organisations across the region.”
Judson Althoff, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft’s Commercial Organisation, said at the AI Tour in Kuala Lumpur, “Southeast Asia is one of the most dynamic regions in the world. Our expanded investment reflects Microsoft’s commitment to helping governments, businesses, and communities innovate responsibly, build with confidence, and accelerate their AI transformation journey.”
The Johor-based cloud region will incorporate sustainable design features, including renewable biofuel-powered generators, water-efficient closed-loop cooling systems, and zero-water evaporation for cooling. Microsoft is also working with local partners to install rainwater harvesting systems in 42 Johor schools and lead mangrove restoration projects in Kampung Sungai Melayu and Perapat River.
Through its Skills2Work Datacenter Foundations Programme with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and The Asia Foundation, Microsoft will train 150 recent graduates for datacentre careers, while partnerships with UNDP Malaysia and BPEN Johor will help upskill 10,000 community members through social enterprises.
The new cloud region complements Microsoft’s earlier Malaysia West region launched in Greater Kuala Lumpur, adding to Azure’s global network of over 70 regions.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s AIForMYFuture initiative continues to advance nationwide, having already trained more than 734,000 Malaysians toward its target of 800,000 by the end of 2025.
Microsoft Malaysia Managing Director Laurence Si said, “As a trusted technology partner to Malaysia for over 33 years, Microsoft is committed to empowering the nation’s workforce with the skills needed to thrive in the AI economy.”
The company’s broader AI agenda also includes the BINA AI Malaysia programme and collaborations with the Employees Provident Fund, EY, and PETRONAS to build AI-powered platforms that enhance innovation and digital capability across industries.
